On December 9, 2016, I completed my walk to all 21 missions, 800 miles, from Mission San Diego de Alcalá to Mission San Francisco Solano de Sonoma. I walked to the missions in segments of 5 days to 3 weeks over a period of 3 years. I followed Ron Briery's "California Mission Walk: The Original Hiker's Guide to California's 21 Spanish Missions Along El Camino Real" in its paper format and, more recently, in its electronic Kindle format.Ron and his wife, Sandy, walked to the 21 missions together as a thru-hike in 2011. Since that time Ron has walked to all 21 missions again and continues to walk to them in segments to ensure his Hiker's Guide is up-to-date. He checks the routes and writes revisions as roads and trails change or a better way is found.The Hiker's Guide is written as 55-57 daily hikes (the last few days have options) from south to north. I have found the step-by-step directions easy to follow. A few of the days were too long for me and I divided them into two days.The California Mission Walk is an urban walk and a rural walk. It goes through cities and towns and through less populated areas, along farmland, vineyards, and over hills & mountains. The mission trails vary from roads and sidewalks to bike paths, highway shoulders, and dirt trails. The destination of each day's walk is a campground, motel, or hostel. Walking to the missions is an adventure! Reaching each California Mission and getting one's Pilgrim Credential stamped is the greatest reward!I was delighted to discover the Hiker's Guide in Kindle format. It is handy and easy to read on my phone. I can add notes and comments just as I did when I carried the paper copy and wrote in the margins. The only times I made wrong turns was when I wasn't paying attention, I turned in the opposite direction from what the guide directed me, or I tried to be an explorer and walked a slightly different way.Ron's Hiker's Guide is a reliable guidebook for walking to the missions. It doesn't mean, though, you can just buy a copy and take off. Ron provides the route, stories along the way, and some suggestions, but it is up to each hiker to plan each day's hike.
